What is a Maine Coon cat?

The Maine Coon is one of the largest domestic cat breeds and a natural breed from the United States, often called the "gentle giant" of the cat world. They are affectionate, playful and incredibly loyal, and despite their impressive size they are famously sweet-natured, getting along well with children, other pets and even dogs. At Fluffydolls we focus on European-line Maine Coons, known for their strong muzzles, tall ears with prominent tufts, and larger, more structured builds.

What Maine Coons are like to live with

Maine Coons are known as the gentle giants of the cat world, and the name fits. They are affectionate, playful and incredibly loyal, and despite their impressive size they have some of the sweetest temperaments of any breed. They bond closely with their people, often following you from room to room, and many will chirp and trill to chat with you throughout the day.

They are wonderfully sociable and famously easygoing, getting along well with children, other pets and even dogs, which makes them a lovely fit for a busy, full household. Maine Coons stay playful and kitten-like well into adulthood, and many enjoy games, puzzle feeders and even a splash of water, yet they are just as content to sprawl beside you at the end of the day.

For all their grand appearance, they are not demanding or highly strung. With a sturdy cat tree to climb, a few good toys and space to stretch out, a Maine Coon settles into home life beautifully and becomes a calm, devoted companion.

Maine Coons in Singapore

Is a Maine Coon the right cat for your home?

For many Singapore households, a Maine Coon is a wonderful fit. They are gentle and patient with children, they get along with other pets and dogs, and their people-loving nature makes them a warm presence in a family home. Since September 2024, cats are allowed in HDB flats, with up to two cats per flat and each cat licensed with AVS, so a Maine Coon is now a home more families can offer, even in an apartment.

The one thing worth planning for is their size. Maine Coons are big, active cats that love to climb and stretch out, so they are happiest with a sturdy cat tree and a little vertical space, and they eat more than a smaller breed. Our warm climate suits them well, though. Because they carry a lighter coat here year-round, they don't go through the heavy seasonal shedding seen in colder countries, and they settle comfortably in an air-conditioned home. We will help you set your space up so a big cat lives happily in a Singapore flat.

health & testing

Maine Coon health, and why it depends on the breeder

Maine Coons are strong, robust cats, but as a large pedigree breed they carry a few inherited conditions that make responsible breeding essential. The ones that matter most are HCM, a heart condition that has a Maine Coon-specific gene, SMA, which affects the spinal muscles, and hip dysplasia, which larger cats are more prone to. All of these can be screened for before a cat is ever bred, which is exactly why the choice of breeder matters so much with this breed.

At Fluffydolls, our Maine Coon parents are DNA and blood tested and cleared of breed-relevant genetic diseases, including the Maine Coon HCM gene (MYBPC3 A31P) and SMA, with the parents also heart-screened and hip-checked, and you will see those results at your viewing. Every kitten also goes home FIV/FeLV-negative, vaccinated, dewormed and examined by a government vet. These are the behind-the-scenes standards that safeguard the next fifteen years with a happy, confident, healthy cat.

Unfortunately, not every kitten is raised this way. Unethical breeders often overbreed their queens, and the kittens are still sold as "Maine Coons," but what arrives is often far from the healthy, well-structured, sweet-natured cat the breed is known for. Poor breeding can lead to:

  • Behavioural issues from a lack of early socialisation

  • A higher chance of genetic or congenital health problems

  • Poorer coat quality, weak structure and lower immune resilience

  • A cat that simply doesn't thrive the way a well-raised kitten would

We say this not to worry you, but to equip you. Choosing a kitten is more than picking a striking face. It is a fifteen year journey, and with a large breed like the Maine Coon the cost of the wrong choice tends to be far higher, both emotionally and financially. You can read more about how we choose our breeders.

Grooming and cARE

Are Maine Coons easy to groom?

More manageable than their size suggests. A Maine Coon's coat is long and shaggy but silkier and less dense than some long-haired breeds, so it resists matting reasonably well. A gentle brush two to three times a week keeps it healthy and tangle-free, with a little extra attention around the ruff, belly and tail, where the fur is thickest and most likely to knot. Because Singapore is warm and tropical, Maine Coons here keep a lighter coat year-round, so they don't go through the heavy seasonal sheds that cats in colder climates do.

Most Maine Coons are so easygoing that grooming becomes a pleasant routine. Once they trust you, they will usually settle in and let you brush them, trim their nails and check their ears, and starting young makes it second nature. You can support coat health with a high-quality diet rich in omega-3 and omega-6, which helps minimise loose fur and keeps that magnificent coat glossy.

Should I bathe or shave my Maine Coon?

Maine Coons are naturally very clean and groom themselves often, and their skin produces natural oils that keep the coat healthy. Bathing too often strips those oils and can cause dryness or irritation, so a bath every two to three months, only if needed, is plenty. Use a gentle, cat-safe shampoo, and avoid commercial grooming salons unless absolutely necessary, since the noise and handling by strangers can be very stressful for cats.

We generally advise against shaving. A cat's coat is a natural layer of protection, and shaving increases the risk of post-clipping alopecia, where the fur grows back patchy or uneven. In a long-haired breed like the Maine Coon, that glorious coat may never return to its original texture. The only areas worth light trimming are the paw pads, to prevent slipping and litter clumping, and the sanitary area, to keep it clean. Both are simple to do at home, and we will show you how.

What should I feed my Maine Coon?

After years of caring for cats, we have tried it all, from raw and home-cooked to freeze-dried, kibble and canned food. What we have found works best and is most sustainable is a balanced mix of good-quality kibble and wet food. Maine Coons are large, active cats with hearty appetites, so they eat more than a smaller breed, and getting quality protein into them supports that big frame. A simple daily routine might be kibble for breakfast, a few freeze-dried bites as an afternoon snack, and a generous serving of wet food with added water for dinner to support hydration.

A few small extras help too. A scoop of probiotic powder supports gut health, which is closely linked to immunity and digestion, and a few drops of fish oil provide the omega-3s that keep skin and coat healthy and reduce shedding naturally. Because the breed can be prone to joint issues, keeping your Maine Coon at a healthy weight really matters, and we always advise our kitten owners based on their own kitten's appetite, energy and preferences.

The Fluffydolls difference

How we raise our Maine Coon kittens

Every Maine Coon we home is raised the same careful way, because temperament and health matter far more to us than size and appearance alone.

Health-tested parents

Our Maine Coon parents are DNA and blood tested for breed-relevant conditions including the HCM gene (MYBPC3 A31P) and SMA, and are heart-screened and hip-checked, with results shown at your viewing. Every kitten is FIV/FeLV-negative, vaccinated, dewormed and government-vet examined.

Raised in a real home

Our European-line kittens grow up around everyday sounds, handling and affection from their first weeks, which is how a Maine Coon's naturally sweet temperament becomes a confident, people-friendly cat ready for family life.

Matched, and supported for life

We match each kitten to the right home rather than the first buyer, and you join our lifetime owners' group afterwards, with grooming and boarding kept just for Fluffydolls families.
