Thinking of Getting a Ragdoll Kitten?

Why Ragdolls?

Ragdolls are calm, affectionate, and often called “puppy cats” for how closely they bond with their humans. They’ll follow you around, lounge beside you, and simply enjoy being part of your day.

They’re full indoor cats and don’t need outdoor time, making them easy to care for. Ragdolls also prefer staying on the ground — they’re not big jumpers and are happiest relaxing on the bed, sofa, or by your feet.

Their gentle, stable energy makes them ideal for families with young children or elderly members. They’re patient, tolerant, and adapt well to calm homes.

Ragdolls are confident and friendly — they don’t hide when guests arrive and usually get along well with other pets. With a proper introduction, they integrate smoothly into multi-pet households.

And if you're worried about scratched furniture, rest easy — Ragdolls aren’t destructive by nature. With a proper scratching post, they’re more than happy to leave your home intact.

Are Ragdolls Easy to Groom?

Yes — Ragdolls are one of the easiest long-haired breeds to care for. Their coats are soft, plush, and surprisingly low-maintenance. They don’t mat easily, and with a gentle brush two to three times a week, you'll keep them looking great and reduce shedding.

Because Singapore is warm and tropical, Ragdolls here keep their lighter summer coat year-round. That means they don’t go through heavy seasonal shedding like cats in colder climates, making grooming even easier.

One thing most first-time owners don’t realise: Ragdolls are so chill and floppy, grooming them is usually effortless. Nail trimming, brushing, even cleaning their teeth — they often just lie there and let you do it.

You can also support their coat health with a high-quality diet rich in omega-3 and omega-6 — this helps minimise loose fur and keeps their coat glossy.

Should I Bathe or Shave My Ragdoll?

One of the great things about Ragdolls is that they’re naturally very clean. Cats groom themselves frequently, and their skin produces a thin layer of natural oils to keep their coat healthy and soft. Bathing too often can strip away these oils, leading to dryness, flakiness, or irritation.

For most Ragdolls, a bath every 2–3 months is more than enough — and only if needed. Many of our kitten owners find they barely need to bathe their cats at all. If you do, make sure to use a gentle, cat-safe shampoo. Do avoid bringing your Ragdoll to a commercial grooming salon unless absolutely necessary — the noise, unfamiliar smells, and handling by strangers can be very stressful for cats.

As for shaving, we generally advise against it. While it might seem like a good way to manage shedding or heat, shaving can actually do more harm than good. A cat’s coat acts as a natural layer of protection — not just from temperature changes, but from skin irritants, sun exposure, and even fungal infections.

Shaving also increases the risk of post-clipping alopecia, a condition where the fur grows back patchy, uneven, or not at all. In long-haired breeds like Ragdolls, the coat may never return to its original plush, luxurious texture.

The only areas we recommend light trimming are:

  • The paw pads (to prevent slipping or litter clumping)

  • The sanitary area (to keep it clean, especially for long-haired cats)

These are simple to do at home, and we’ll guide you on how to do it safely and gently.

What Should I Feed My Ragdoll?

After years of caring for cats, we’ve tried it all — raw food, home-cooked meals, freeze-dried, kibble, canned food, and supplements. Through all that, we’ve found that the best and most sustainable diet for our ragdolls is a balanced mix of kibble and wet food. Wet food can be a combination of canned food, gently cooked meals, or raw (only if prepared safely). For most owners, sticking to high-quality kibble and canned food is more than enough.

We also recommend keeping things simple but effective with a few daily supplements. A scoop of probiotic powder helps support gut health, which is closely linked to your cat’s overall immunity and digestion. A few drops of fish oil provide Omega-3s, promoting healthy skin, a shiny coat, and reducing shedding naturally. Freeze-dried treats can be used as occasional snacks or sprinkled over meals as a topper — your Ragdoll will thank you.

A typical day might look like this: kibble for breakfast, a few freeze-dried bites as an afternoon snack, and a generous serving of wet food with added water for dinner to support hydration. That said, not all cats are the same — we’ll always advise our kitten owners based on their individual kitten’s appetite, energy level, and preferences.

Why It Matters Where Your Ragdoll Comes From

Ragdolls are generally a healthy and robust breed, but only when bred responsibly. At Fluffydolls, we import kittens exclusively from ethical breeders who do things right from the start:

DNA and blood tests for all breeding cats

Limit breeding to protect the mama cat’s well-being

Raise kittens inside their homes, not cages

Ensure early socialisation and proper nutrition

These are the behind-the-scenes standards that safeguard your future with a happy, confident, and healthy cat.

But unfortunately, not all kittens are raised this way.

Unethical breeders often overbreed their queens, forcing them to give birth multiple times a year, at the cost of both the mother’s and the kittens’ health. The kittens will still be sold as “Ragdolls,” but what you get is often far from the gentle, easy-going cat this breed is known for.

Poor breeding practices can result in:

❌ Behavioural issues due to lack of socialisation

❌ Higher chances of genetic or congenital health problems

❌ Poor coat quality and immune resilience

❌ A cat that simply doesn’t thrive the way a well-raised kitten would

We say this not to scare you, but to equip you. Because choosing a kitten is more than picking a cute face. It’s a 15 to 18-year journey. And the cost of making the wrong choice often ends up being much higher, emotionally and financially.
